Q: How can we contact the fire department
without calling 911?
A:
You can contact us by calling
281.355.1266 during normal business hours or you can email us at
info@springfd.com
Q: How do we know if there is a burn ban in
effect?
A:
You can either contact the Harris County Fire and
Emergency Services Department at 281.931.1085, check their
website
or check our website for details and information.
Q:
I notice
it says “Volunteer” Does anyone get paid to be a fire fighter in
Spring?
A:
Yes and
No…We found and ever-increasing need to hire paid professionals to
work during the times when most volunteers are not available which
is daily during the week. Therefore
our volunteers are supplemented by a staff of 6 paid professionals
that work between 7am and 5pm Monday through Friday.
They are currently split between two stations. The rest of the time our volunteer professionals handle the
emergency calls and do not receive any compensation.
Q:
Why
does a fire truck show up when we call an ambulance?
A:
The fire service is ever-changing and in the last 10 years it
has become more common for volunteer fire departments to provide
Emergency Medical Service as well.
In 1997 Spring Volunteer Fire Department began assisting
Cypress
Creek EMS (your ambulance service) on high priority medical
calls throughout our service area.
Q:
What do I need to do if I
want to volunteer?
A:
Contact our Administration Office to receive a
membership application
by calling 281.355.1266
Q:
I don't
want to become a member of the fire department, is there anything I
can do as a citizen?
A:
Yes there are several things:
-
Clean
the street signs in the subdivision with soap and water so all
police, fire and EMS personnel can read them.
-
Put
your street address on both sides of the mailbox so it can be
viewed from either direction. Put your address on the curb
or your house but wherever your address is, make sure it
contrasts with the background so we can read it.
The bigger the better!
-
Ask
others to keep from parking cars on both sides of the road
directly across from each other.
We have had cases where we were not able to get down a
street because there were two cars parked away from the curb
across from each other. This
will cause us to have to back out and go down another street
that will delay us several minutes.
-
We
have a division in our department that provides drinks and cold
towels for the fire fighters at calls when we are going to be
there for a long time. We
call that division “Rehab”.
You don’t need to know anything about fire fighting to
help. The Rehab
division is one of the most important divisions to a fire
fighter! If you
would like to participate with Rehab contact Barbara at
281.355.1266 and she will put you in contact with Fran Jackson of
the Rehab Division
Q: Why do I see fire trucks coming down the street with lights
and sirens on and all of a sudden they shut their lights and sirens
off? Are they just trying to get through traffic?
A:
No, in most
cases what this means is that after the fireman were notified of an
emergency and they began to respond to the call, they were either
disregarded by another truck or an officer that arrived on scene
prior to that fire truck's arrival or it could be that the person
who called in the emergency called back and said there was no longer
an emergency or things like that. We do not turn our lights
and sirens on for no reason. Sometimes you will see us parked
with our lights on but no sirens, this is so we can be seen and
protect our personnel, etc. but if you hear our sirens that means we
are responding to an emergency call of some sort.
Q: How do the volunteers get notified of a fire or medical call?
A:
Each volunteer in our department is issued a voice pager. This
device is portable and alerts the individual to an emergency by
beeping when their station is requested to respond to an
emergency. After their pager beeps our dispatch center's
dispatcher tells us what trucks are to respond, what type of call we
are responding to and where the call is located. We will have an
example posted on the website soon to give you an example.
Q: Does the fire department offer CPR
training for citizens
A:
At this time we do not. Cypress Creek EMS does offer CPR
training. In fact, they provide CPR training for our
personnel. You can contact Cypress Creek EMS at 281.440.9650
or www.ccems.com
Q: Does the fire department offer any type of training to it's
residents or business owners?
A:
Yes, Currently the
department offers fire extinguisher training to it's businesses that
request it.
